Washington - Access to Instruction and Measurement(WA-AIM): ELA, math, and science alternate assessments in grades 3–5 for students with significant cognitive disabilities documented in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) are required for federal and state accountability.
Students in 2nd and 5th grade will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener
Purpose of Assessment: The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener appraises the cognitive development of students by measuring students’ learned reasoning abilities in the three symbol systems most closely related to success in school: Verbal reasoning, Quantitative reasoning, and Nonverbal reasoning.
The test acts as a universal screener for our Highly Capable/Gifted program. In addition, it can be used by the classroom teachers to:
To guide efforts to adapt instruction to the needs and abilities of students.
To provide a measure of each student’s level of cognitive development that captures important information not represented in school grades or in other measures of school achievement.
To identify students whose predicted levels of achievement are markedly discrepant from their observed levels of achievement.
If the screener identitifies the student as a potential Highly Capable/Gifted students, they may be tested using the full CogAT. You will be contacted by the HiCap Coordinator Jennifer Gilliland if your student needs further testing.
