May Superintendent's Message

(As published in the West County Times)

May 16, 2022 Message

Good day Kiona-Benton City Community,

May is the hardest month for educators and kids, because they see the end in sight, and then you have all of the end-of-year ceremonies, and Spring sports playoffs, and it all makes for a bunch of hectic schedules! I wish the weather would turn more Spring-like, because we are almost to Summer, and all I can celebrate are the rare days above 70!

Below is a list of events that the school will be hosting between now and the end of school, not the least of which is a return to Camp Wooten for 6th grade! We are one of the few districts that still attend Camp Wooten, and this is another reason to thank the community for passing our last Levy. These are the types of indispensable activities that you support through your local levy dollars!

We will be reconfiguring the elementary school for next year. Mr. Williams, who served as Intermediate Principal, is off to Kennewick School District, so we will go back to being a TK-5 elementary as it has been in Benton City for most of our history. Mrs. Hanson will assume the Principal position for the whole school and we will hire an Assistant Principal to help her. We are also hiring an Elementary Counselor, so we will have a new and improved team ready for the kids in the Fall. It really will look no different for kids and parents, but we will have one leader in charge and we will increase consistency among policies by doing this.

So go ahead and check out the list of events below, and don’t forget that we will be offering Summer School at each level. If your student wants or needs some extra time with breakfast and lunch being served, see your building principal. Have a great rest of May, and don’t hesitate to reach out if I can be of assistance at 588-2000.

Pete Peterson, Superintendent
