Changes to the Dual Language Program for 2021-22

We are making changes to and pausing our Dual Language Program in Kiona-Benton for the 2021-2022 school year.  The Dual Language Program serves students in the primary grades and falls under the district’s broader Bilingual Program.  We first began the Dual Language Program during the 2019-2020 year serving kindergarten students. Last year during the 2020-2021 school year, the Dual Language Program served students in kindergarten and first grade. Unfortunately, due to the interruptions and inconsistencies that resulted from the COVID shut down and various schedules, the continued implementation of our Dual Language Program was not as strong as we had hoped. Because of this, we are pausing our Dual Language Program (specifically the Spanish Literacy component) for the 2021-2022 school year.

It is important to note that the students who qualify for our Bilingual Program will still receive the support they need.  The difference now is that the students who were originally placed in a Bilingual classroom (this year’s 1st and 2nd graders) will be assigned to different classrooms where they will receive support from teachers who hold English Language endorsements, and/or from our Bilingual teachers and paraeducators. Instruction will be only in English at this time, and we will continue with Spanish Literacy at a later date. More information on the next steps for the program will be coming this fall.

Ki-Be Primary School and our entire district are committed to bringing back our Dual Language program as soon as we have all the necessary components in place.  A high priority for our district is supporting students to graduate with strong bilingual and biliterate skills, and we want to help develop these skills early on in our students’ learning journey.
