Our class discovered how a cloud forms by making a "mini-cloud" in a jar at our science center.   After discussing how there are tiny particles always floating in the air, either dust, smoke, or from other pollutants we went right to work!

  1. Warm water was put in the bottom of the jar.  It was filled about ¼ full.
  2. Next, Mrs. Ostrander lit a match and held it over the jar opening.  (WARNING:  Only the teacher should handle the matches
3. Quickly, a bag of ice was placed on top of the jar.
4. Then we observed what was going on inside of the jar.
5. We discovered the neat process that happens to make a cloud!

· The lit match created smoke similar to dust particles in the air.

· As the warm air rises from the bottom of the jar (we call this vapor). It "grabbed onto the smoke particles

· The cold air from the ice cubes pushed down onto the warm air and caused condensation.  Bingo!  A cloud was formed!
