The Bear Facts on the report of scabies at schools
This letter is intended to clear up any misinformation about an outbreak of scabies in the Kiona-Benton schools.
To set your minds at ease; There is NOT an outbreak of scabies at any of our schools. the confirmed cases at the high school were properly treated under a physician's care and all precautionary treatments have been given to people who may have been exposed. Once treated, persons infected with scabies can return to normal activities the day after treatment is complete. We have disinfected all classrooms at the high school and notified each of the students in the class of precautions that should be followed.
Here is some helpful information from our school nurse.
Scabies is a common condition worldwide, affecting all races and social classes. It is usually passed by prolonged skin-to-skin contact or exposure to bedding or cloth articles the infected person has used. This is why it common within households and household members are all treated whether symptomatic or not. Symptoms include itching and skin rash. The rash may affect much of the body or be limited to common sites such as the area between the fingers, wrist, elbow, armpit, waist, buttocks, and shoulder blades. (Young children may have it on head, face, neck, palms and soles, but this is rare in older children and adults).
Treatment of scabies does require care of a Licensed Health Care Provider, but the treatment is readily available and is effective. Should you notice any symptoms that could possibly be scabies, seek medical advice as soon as possible.
Additional information may be found on the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website, www.cdc.com
. If you have any questions or concerns for your child, please call the school nurse at 588-2130, or contact your health care provider.
